If there is a basement in the home, many times the owners will choose to renovate and use it to make additional living space or have a sunroom put on. Either one of these ways are great to get extra square footage. The only issue in doing either of these projects is to make sure that they are done correctly.

When a person intends to finish out a basement to use as additional living space in the home, there are certain things that need to be looked into beforehand. The main issue is water. If there is any evidence that your basement has water or moisture coming into it from anywhere, it must be addressed before you go any further. It can be caused from several different reasons. You might be able to find the problem easily and correct it if it comes from a plumbing problem, from moisture from upstairs, or maybe even a poorly ventilated dryer installed in the basement itself.

If the water is pouring or dripping in because of a crack in your foundation somewhere, this can be a little harder to resolve. If the crack is visible, then you might get instructions on how to make a minor repair yourself. If the crack is not visible and you can not determine how the water is coming in, then it would be wise to contact a water damage professional to find and repair the problem for you.

Adding a sunroom is also a great thing to add value to your home and provide more room that people love to use, but only if they are constructed correctly as well. The majority of the time, people will buy a sunroom from a company that might come prefabricated. The installation of the sunroom may or may not be included in the price. It is recommended to use a professional installer whether from the company that you purchased the sunroom from or one of your own choosing.

Before you make final payment on the installation or the sunroom if installation was included, you need to make sure that it was done correctly so that you will not have any leaking resulting from faulty installation. If there is, the installer should be responsible for correcting the problem. Even if your sunroom is installed correctly and shows no signs of leaking, they could develop later. You need to know how long your warranty is for and if it covers future repairs or inspections.

Cleaning Carpet And How Water Can Cause More Trouble If Not Managed Right

It is amazing that some people are able to have carpet in their homes for quite a few years and will still look brand new. Those people evidently do not have children or pets running around their homes. Those who have carpeting, children, and pets know the woes of keeping it clean looking and stain free. It can be a job that never ends between vacuuming and cleaning regularly.

Even if your carpeting looks clean, it can still be the home for all kinds of dust mites and other gruesome little creatures. However, many people still prefer carpeting over tile or hardwood for their floor covering. So, the only way to help keep allergens and dirt accumulation at a minimum, carpeting must be vacuumed and cleaned regularly. The vacuuming helps a lot in making your carpet last longer and look better, but the cleaning is what helps the most.

It is important when carpeting is cleaned that it be done correctly. While it is common for many people to have a cleaning crew to occasionally to do this hard job for them, others had rather do it themselves with their own home carpet cleaning machine or rent one at a local supplier. Either way is fine as long as there is not an excess amount of water put into the carpeting.

When you clean your carpets yourself, you should remember to use a treatment on hard to remove stains before you start the cleaning process. You should also only use cleaning solutions on those stains or the cleaner itself that are recommended for carpets. This will prevent unnecessary suds from being left as a residue. Using a cleaning solution that is not made specifically for carpet cleaning machines can cause serious or possibly permanent damage to them.

When you spray the water onto the carpet from the machine, avoid over saturating it. It will not require as much water to get the carpet clean as you might think and over wetting the carpet could cause it to take over long to completely dry. If you use water in excess on the carpet, you could run the risk of mold or mildew developing. Mold development is much worse than a dirty carpet. If you think that there is a possibility that your carpet has mold growing underneath it or along the edges, you should use a mold killing product that is safe for carpeting or remove it all together.

Water Damage And How Hot Water Heaters Can Cause It

If you have ever had your hot water heater rupture and bust, either in the plumbing pipes, at the valve, or in the construction of the unit itself, then you may have experienced what an inconvenience it can be, not to mention the mess. Hot water heaters are an appliance in our home that we usually do not see everyday or give very much thought to unless it breaks down or causes a flood.

The several things that can cause a hot water heater to create flooding are usually preventable just by implementing an inspection of it and the plumbing attached to it. When the pipe lines that go to it are kept in good repair, it lowers the risk of sudden busting. Inspecting the hot water heater itself for leaks and signs of rusting can help prevent problems as well. These precautions will not prevent the heating element in the unit itself from going out, but they will help prevent a flood in your kitchen, basement, or wherever else your hot water heater resides in your home.

If a hot water heater is installed properly in the first place, flooding will not be an issue if the worst happens. Hot water heaters should always be placed in a large pan that is made specifically to go underneath them. This will help only if it is a small leak that is soon noticed and repaired before the pan overflows. It might not prevent a flood, but it could keep a small leak from doing slow damage to the floor it sits on.

Having a drain installed very near a hot water heater is the best protection from a flood. This way if the tank or plumbing has a sudden gushing rupture, all the water will drain away and prevent it from reaching other areas of the home. This is a precaution to have in place in case this were to happen while you were away from home for the day or even longer.

Tankless hot water heaters are fairly new on the market. They take up much less space than traditional hot water heaters. These newer tanks are not really tanks at all, but more like a filter that heats the cold water as it travels through the unit. They supply endless hot water so you never need to worry about allowing water to heat up after someone else just bathed or ran the dishwasher. Of course, plumbing might still be an issue, but they are said to help reduce your energy bill because they only heat water as it is needed.

Pollutants Cause Water Damage On A Larger Scale than You Think

We are becoming increasingly aware that we must learn to conserve our natural resource of water. We can not make it ourselves like electricity, once we are out of clean, drinkable water, we will just be out. Of course, running out of water might be a long, long, time away, but for the future generations it will become increasingly difficult to have adequate water to go around if the world does not stop abusing it now.

Since the dawn of the industrial age, many of our rivers and streams have been polluted to the point that it has been found to be very unsafe to even swim in some of them. Fish have died and been deformed by all the toxic pollutants that have been constantly pumped into many waterways for years. Now, not only are rivers and streams at risk of being ruined, but our very oceans are becoming littered with all sorts of debris and pollutants as well.

While some states in our country are taking action to reduce toxic chemicals and trash being put into their water sources, other places in other countries in the bid to catch up with the other nations in prosperity and productivity are carelessly allowing their water sources to reach the state of the ones we are trying to clean up. It does no good for one area of the Earth to try and repair and maintain safety in our water supply while other areas of the world or disregarding the importance of enacting measures to ensure water cleanliness.

While the cleanliness of our fresh water supplies is vitally important, so also is the conservation of it. We as Americans waste a tremendous amount of water because we have become accustomed to having a great supply at any given time. The recent droughts in the Southern states brought attention and awareness to just how difficult the situation can become when fresh water is in extreme short supply. Many were forced to travel for miles last year just to obtain drinking water for themselves and their animals.

As responsible, intelligent people, we have to start considering the importance of our water supply and begin to treat it with the respect it is due. While we are trying to clean up the air we breathe and damage to our planet in general, water protection and conservation is something that is the responsibility of each and every one of us. We each must make our own contributions now to this effort instead of waiting until there is true crisis for us and our planet.

Easy Steps To Cleaning Up Your Well Water

So many people who live in urban and suburban areas take their city tap water for granted. They just turn on the faucet and run it for as long as they like and wait for their monthly bill to arrive. This is a greater convenience than they might realize. For people who live in rural areas, having a steady clean supply of water for the home can sometimes get a little complicated and inconvenient.

People who live in country areas will usually have to get their water from a well that has been dug deep into the ground somewhere on their property. It is an old tried and true way to get water into the house. It might seem like a simple enough solution and the majority of the time it is, but it is not without problems on occasion. Over forty two million people in our country have wells or other private water sources and must deal with the issues that can arise themselves.

One of the most dreaded aspects of having your water supplied from a well is the possibility of it going dry. Normally, a well will be drilled deep enough that this is usually not a problem, but sometimes during long hot summers when there is little rainfall, it does happen. People usually deal with this by either having the well dug deeper, drill a new one in a different location, or haul in the water they need until when and the water returns, if it does.

Another well water issue is the cleanliness. Well water will often contain lead, copper, and other elements that are not safe for continual drinking and general use.
There are water purifiers that people with wells can use either on their faucets or their well itself to clean out the majority of elements like lead, but a more urgent and serious problem is if the water contains E.coli or other unhealthy bacteria. This can be more difficult to treat, but it must be remedied for the safety of the family.

If you have a well that supplies the water for your family, then you should check with your county water or health department to check into having your water tested if it has not been. They will be able to let you know how safe or unsafe your well water really is and how to remedy the problem if there is one. Even if you have had your well water tested previously, it should still be retested yearly to confirm its quality and safety.

Water Damage On The Rise Due To Increased Flooding Across America

It seems that in recent years there are more and more floods happening in places where they have not really been an issue before. These sudden torrential rainfall events are causing rivers and streams to swell and run over their banks all over the place. It has caught so many home owners unaware and without insurance to cover their losses. People who were luckily spared during some of the floods are now making sure that they have insurance coverage when and if they are placed in jeopardy again. For those that were caught without insurance and were not so lucky, the process of trying to restore their homes and belongings has been a life altering experience.

If you live anywhere near water that has the potential to flood, it is simply unthinkable to not get insurance that will take care of you if your home is ever affected Even minor flooding can be devastating to your finances if you have no insurance coverage. You need only ask some of the recent flood victims who did not have coverage how it has nearly destroyed their lives to convince you that it is a necessity.

While some areas that are in danger of having a flood are trying to foresee a flooding event are bracing up levees and trying to be prepared, it is still no guarantee that water will not reach your home. When Mother Nature decides to spit out her fury, it can be too late to try and take any precautions then. The best thing to do is to make sure you will be protected long before you have to deal with the possibility of having your home flooded.

Go over your current insurance policy. Make sure that there are no loopholes concerning your coverage in natural disaster situations. If you find that you are not adequately covered for flooding and other side affects of it, it is essential that you either have your policy updated or change companies all together if necessary to obtain the flood coverage you could need in the future. Do not wait until a flooding threat is looming on your horizon to worry about whether you have the right insurance policy or not.

Prevention is worth a lot more than a pound of cure if the event of a flood. You can lose all your personal belongings and your entire home as well because of one severe flooding incident. They rarely come with any real warning. People always make sure they are protected if a fire happens, but these days flooding can be almost as great a threat.

Water Damage And Mold Issues After The Flooding Is Over

The aftermath of flooding can cause real distress to the occupants of a home depending on how severe the flooding was. It can take hours or even days to remove all the items that can be affected. Furniture, clothing, novelties, carpeting, tile, and so many other things can be damaged beyond saving especially if they were contaminated with sewer water and toxic chemicals. The only good thing is that most of these things are not that difficult to replace. The actual structure of your home can cost thousands and thousands of dollars to repair.

If your home was flooded and the water was removed quickly, the possibility of severe or permanent damage to the structure will hopefully be kept to a minimum. When it had standing water for days or weeks, the scenario might be a little bleaker. You can end up having to tear out wall and floors because of wood warping, rotting, and mold growth. This is about as bad as it gets unless your insurance company considers the damage too severe to even try and repair. Hopefully you have insurance coverage that takes care of all types of flooding, but many people have found out too late that they did not.

The only way to really access the damage you have to call in professional water damage experts to figure exactly how bad your situation is. They deal with flooded home issues all the time and know what can or can not be done to save certain things and structures. Make sure that the water damage company you or your insurance company hires is well established and has a good work history behind them.

Many companies will help you remove the damaged articles such as furniture and other personal belongings from the home before renovation begin. What ever you can salvage will likely have to be stored while the repairs are being made. How long repairs will be going on will depend on how much damage there is. You and your family will also probably have to stay elsewhere for a time.

When your home has been repaired and you are ready to move in, make sure that the water damage company resolved any and all issues concerning mold. Mold is hazardous to human health and is often a lingering result of flooding. A qualified water damage company will have made sure there is not mold remaining in the home.

Tips For Salvaging Belongings After Flood Water Damage

There have been literally thousands of people in our country alone in recent years that have had their homes flooded either a little or a lot because of storms that have wreaked havoc in certain areas. The hurricane Katrina victims come to mind first, but there have also been plenty of others living in the Pacific North West and in the Mid West as well. All of these people were forced to leave their homes quickly with no set time when they would be allowed to return and with no idea what would be salvageable when they finally did get to go back in.

For the fortunate ones, the damage could have been minimal if they only had a few inches of water, but for so many evacuees, the water level was much deeper and the affects the water had on their belongings was much greater. When they were allowed back into their homes after the water had receded, they were left in disbelief when they saw the terrible mess that was left behind. Whether they had insurance coverage or not, no one really knows where to start when faced with devastation of this kind.

The main objective for flood victims in the aftermath is determining what can be saved and what can not. There will be no question that many things are simply ruined beyond repair and must be thrown out. Many times the water had been in a home for several weeks and anything the water touched was likely to have been exposed to sewage and other toxic chemicals. Furniture, draperies, carpets, and rugs are usually destroyed and would not be items worth trying to restore.

If a two or more story home was flooded only on the first floor, the possibility of saving items that were up stairs might be a little better. If the water did not reach up there, clothing, bedding, carpets, rugs, draperies, and furniture might be alright. It will depend on how much moisture from humidity formed and if it was enough to cause mold growth. Mold is also a destructive element especially to wood, fabric, sheetrock, and any other thing it can grow on. Even if the water itself does not cause some of the main structures in a home like floors and walls to have to be torn out, the mold that begins living in them might.

Plastic, glass, and sometimes metal objects can be recovered and cleaned when they have been in the nastiest of water. If it can be scrubbed and sterilized, it is possible to reuse some of these items. A home owner that has been the victim of severe flooding is usually glad to be able to salvage anything they can from their life before the flood.

Having Your Water Damaged Home Repaired Should Be Done Professionally

No matter how your home has been flooded with water, the damage has been done and must be repaired. Different types of water damage will have to be dealt with in different ways and not every home owner will know exactly what needs to be done in order to get everything back in good condition again. Water damage experts will be the ones you need to turn to in order to access your specific water damage issues and what to do about them.

When you have had a home flood that was caused by a break in your plumbing somewhere in the home, this can be some of the least serious to deal to deal with, but even it must be cleaned up and dried out correctly if you do not want to have more issues than simple wetness. Your hardwood floors can be affected, your carpeting, and any wood work in the structure of the home itself if it was saturated long enough.

Water damage specialists can get the water out of the home and tend to the after affects. They have the proper equipment to dry your hardwood floors out so that they will not buckle and warp. They can clean and dry your carpeting so it will be as good as new. They will be able to determine whether or not the wetness could have caused mold to begin growing. If it has, they also know how to treat this and prevent it from coming back. All of these things must be dealt with promptly to prevent more severe or permanent damage.

When a flood was caused from a natural disaster like a river flood, it can be even more devastating to a home. Even if you did not get that much water in the house, it could be contaminated because of where the water came from. The water might have contained sewage and chemicals. Your home will have to be cleaned up even more thoroughly if this type of flooding happens. Your furniture and other items might not be able to be salvaged if they were in contact with the filthy water. This kind of damage will usually depend on what the water level in the home was.

Whenever you have flooding of any kind that causes a floor to be submerged with several inches or more of water, the best thing you can do is have a water damage expert to come and help you evaluate the situation. This will help you to make sure you are handling the situation correctly and a better chance of repairing the damage the best way possible.

Flood Insurance Cures Water Damage

Did you realize that even if your home has been flooded by only two or three inches of water the cost of having it cleaned up and repaired can be as much as ten thousand dollars or more? Just imagine what the cost could be if you had a flood that put your home in several feet or more? The amount to repair and restore can be staggering. It has ruined so many financially because they were flooded in their home or business and had no insurance coverage that would take care of flood damage.

Many mortgage companies and banks require flood coverage these days because of the risk of flooding. Did you know that there is a risk of flooding in all fifty states? Almost anywhere that you live can run the risk of being flooded either because of heavy rainfall, snow melting, rivers, streams, creeks, lakes, and not to mention just a good old break in plumbing some where in the house. Even if you are not required to have flood insurance because your rent a home or your home is already paid for, what would you do if you were flooded? You would still have to repair the home you own or you would have to replace the items you lose if you rent and the landlord has no coverage.

Having no flood coverage is just terribly risky even if your area ha\s not seen a flood in years. It does not mean that it can not or will not happen.. The weather patterns can not be counted on to do what they always have in the past. The outlook for weather conditions some believe will be even worse in the future. Of course, we have no real way of knowing how bad things may or may not get, but the point is will you be prepared? Having insurance to cover flooding will mean the difference in whether you will be financially crippled or not if you have to borrow money to repair the home and replace all your things. If it is your business that is destroyed and uninsured, how will you even go back to work there?

There are more and more companies offering good flood coverage. They are having to because of the fierce demand from the public to be protected. The risk of being flooded during a thirty year home mortgage is actually greater than the risk a home might be in from a fire. A lot of people probably do not realize this either.

Always Hire Licensed Water Damage Experts For Your Protection

For anyone who has not suffered the horror of having their home or business flooded like so many of those in the Midwest have you can not even begin to comprehend how great the losses really are. First of all, many small and large business owners alike were brought to a dead stop in producing any income and the damage they sustained will likely keep them stopped for months to come. Homeowners that were flooded will endure the inconvenience of temporary housing somewhere whether it will be in shelters or the homes of friends or relatives until their homes can be restored, if they can be restored.

In a bid to speed up the restoration process, it is a sure bet that many of these people, mostly the uninsured, will be tempted to take a short cut if they can when repairing their homes and businesses in order to be able to return to them sooner and save money. Even without insurance, this can be a big mistake. While it is true that applying for government help might take longer than is wanted, it is better to wait for enough money to hire professional water damage crews rather than hiring unlicensed individuals that may not supply the results that you will need in order to return to your home safely.

Professional water damage teams will have the necessary equipment, knowledge, and experience necessary to clean up and repair the terrible damage that will have been done in so many homes and businesses. There are so many serious issues to contend with when cleaning and repairing a flooded home. The cleanup will probably entail removing, mud, silt, toxic chemicals, and even sewage. These are no minor issues at all. If they are not cleaned up and removed properly, your home or business will not be safe to live or work in.

Then there is the issue of repair. You will only want someone that is truly qualified to do the repair in your home that might consist of tearing out and replacing walls, flooring, and even some main structure if necessary. One thing that can also not be ignored is the remediation of mold. Mold is toxic and hazardous to the health of anyone living where it is left to grow. It must be eliminated completely to retain the value of the home after it is repaired and for the safety of people.

So, while hiring individuals that are not properly licensed and insured themselves might seem like an easy way to save some money, will it be the best investment in the long run? Probably not, so it is much more sensible to know that your home or business is going to be cleaned and restored properly because have you not already lost enough peace of mind already?
Rachel Yoshida is a writer of many topics, visit some of her sites, like
Water Damage Miami and Water Damage Orlando .

Home Plumbing And Water Damage Go Together

Water is most definitely a necessity in every home, but where there is water coming into a home, there is also the potential risk for water damage. This is why making sure your plumbing and water using appliances are always well maintained. Keeping plumbing and water using appliances in good repair can help you to avoid any slowly developing or sudden water damage to your house. Many of the precautions can be done by the home owners themselves.

Making sure that all the plumbing in the home is working correctly might seem like a big chore, but actually it could take you just a couple of hours or less, once or twice a year to stay on top of any potential problem areas. A check list that you can design specifically for the water sources in your home is the ideal way to make the inspection go faster and ensure that you do not overlook anything.

You can make your list by starting on the outside or the inside if you prefer. When you make your outside check list, include any spigots that you connect hoses to. Include any outdoor water features you may have like a fish pond, swimming pool, fountains, spa, or hot tub. The crawl space underneath the home may be a place you can inspect yourself, but if you are not crazy about spooky low places, you might consider a plumber for this part of the task. Once you have covered every place on the outside of the home, make sure you have listed any repairs that are needed and get to them promptly. Just because they are outside the home does not mean they do not have the potential to cause damage.

When making your inside check list you will put down the most common places like the plumbing underneath the kitchen and bathroom sinks, toilets, showers, and bathtubs. Behind the walls where there is hidden plumbing needs to have an access panel of some kind to check these areas because if they leak, they can and probably will cause mold. The laundry room, basement, and any water using appliances like the dishwasher refrigerator, and also hot water heaters do not need to be forgotten.

Many times a lot of the plumbing is in the basement of a home and even occasionally there might be some in the attic. Never forget to inspect these places well too. Doing your own home plumbing inspections can end up saving you a lot of money and aggravation just because you spend a little time making inspections and staying caught up with small repairs instead of waiting until they turn into big ones.

Rachel Yoshida is a writer of many topics, visit some of her sites, like
Water Damage Miami and Water Damage Orlando .

Your Washing Machine Can Cause Massive Water Damage

How many loads of laundry per week do you think the average family washes? Well, it is probably around ten loads and maybe even more for those with small children. Of course, every family may not have as many loads as others, but you better believe that the washer and dryer are two of the busiest and most necessary appliances in the home. Between the amount of clothing worn by everyone each week combined with sheets, towels and other miscellaneous articles that must be laundered occasionally, it is not a good thing when the washing machine is not working.

When you invest in a washer and dryer for your home they are appliances that you want to last for years, so if you can, buy some good ones. Even good ones can need maintenance occasionally. Hoses can get pinched and develop leaks, washers in the hoses can wear out and cause leaking where the hoses connect to the spigots. When you install your washing machine the first time, check the hoses and make sure they are not too crowed and make sure that there are no leaks when you connect the water supply to them. These kinds of leaks from a washing machine might cause wood damage and mold over time and need to be repaired as soon as you notice them.

If you make sure these that the connections and hoses have no leaks and check them out occasionally, you should not have to worry very much about leaks causing water damage to the machine or the flooring under and around your machine. There is another issue that could cause flooding that you may not be able to foresee. This would be if you develop leaking underneath in the mechanics of the washing machine itself. If you get a flood caused by this, you might not be able to do much in the way of preventing this other than listening out for unusual sounds or movement from the machine.

If your washing machine causes a flood and soaks the floors underneath and around it, it is important to get the water cleaned up as quickly as you can. Hopefully the flood will not happen while you are out of the house. This is one good reason to only run water using appliances when you are at home if possible. After the water is all dried up, if the water did come in contact with baseboards, you will want to check it soon afterward to make sure there is no mold growth. If you notice any at all, you should treat the area with a bleach solution or a product designed specifically to kill mold.

Rachel Yoshida is a writer of many topics, visit some of her sites, like
Water Extraction Information and Water Damage Information .

Water Conservation Is Part Of Being Green

During this time of the year, water conservation is one of the most important things that you can practice next to staying properly hydrated. More and more communities are putting up notices for the residents to conserve water due to lack of rain and there are a lot of things that you can do to take part in this. Not only should you practice this during the summer, but practicing water conservation year round can save you a good amount of money on your water bill every month even when there is not a drought in your area.

First, if at all possible, restrict the number of baths that members of your household take every day. Even better, try to switch everyone over to taking showers instead, since these will typically use a lot less water than a full bath tub of water will. Around 10 minutes in the shower equals usually less than half a full tub of water, so if you want to bathe more than once in a day, switching to showers could be the best thing for your situation.

If you have lawn sprinklers, you can set these on a timer to only be active for shorter periods of time than throughout the rest of the year. The sprinklers should only water the lawn for a few minutes, then stop for a while, then water again. You need to give the water that was sprayed a change to soak into the soil before letting the sprinklers start watering again.

Something else you can do is turn your sprinklers off if you know that it is going to rain. Some sprinkler systems have a rain sensor that you can turn on so your sprinklers automatically stay off if the ground is wet.

If you like to use your water hose to spray off your driveway or your deck, using a broom is often just as effective. Do this instead.

Watering your lawn early in the morning is the best time if you do not have a sprinkler system to water the lawn for you. The water that you spray on the lawn later in the day does not have as much of a chance to penetrate into the soil since it is much warmer in the afternoon and the water evaporates. This will cause you to have to water your lawn again sooner than you normally would.

Rachel Yoshida is a writer of many topics, visit some of her sites, like
Atlanta water damage restoration and Boston water damage restoration .

Correcting Water Damage Issues Before They Happen

It is always better when we can find water leaks in the home before they can cause any damage to occur to any walls, flooring, tiles, or woodwork, but this is not always the case. Sometimes we might have a leak in our basement that goes undetected for months before we discover it is there. Leaking behind a bathtub or shower wall can happen and cause mold to start to grow, even if it is a small one.

It is very important to keep a lookout in our home for water leaks of any size. When a leak causes an area to get wet and remain wet, it can cause wood rotting and mold growth. Mold growth can get out of hand quickly when the conditions are right. When mold grows on wet wood or sheetrock, it can mean that the whole area will have to be torn out and replaced to completely get rid of it. This can get expensive fast.

Minor plumbing issues are the main reasons for leaks in the home. These can usually be repaired by a home owner if they are handy around the house. If you are not very good with any plumbing issues, get a plumber in to make any repairs as soon as you find them. It is not wise to let water issues linger for longer than necessary.

Checking your water using appliances like the dishwasher, hot water heaters, washing machine, hot tubs, and refrigerators is a smart thing to do occasionally. Sometimes they will have a small leak that only occurs when they are in use. This can cause small puddles to happen and then dry up on their own when the appliance is not in use. This can cause floor rotting and mold growth too.

Even outside the home has the potential to cause water damage. Landscaping issues can cause cracking in the foundation and leak into the crawl space or into the home in the basement. Gutters that are installed improperly or damaged can cause water damage to the roof edge or foundation too. These problems also need to be taken care of as soon as they are discovered. Inspect your attic occasionally to identify roof leaks.

One sure way to lower the value of your home is to allow water to damage it. Not many people want to invest in a house that has had apparent water issues. Minor leaks may not cause extreme devastation, but they can cause problems never the less. Mold in a home has become a very serious issue and any evidence of water damage in the past might present a red flag for the possibility of mold somewhere in the house.

Rachel Yoshida is a writer of many topics, visit some of her sites, like
Water Damage and Water Damage NYC .

Water Damage To Your Foundation Causes Major Problems

Many of us take a lot of pride in the way the outside of our homes look. We like our yards to be well maintained all throughout the year. This can be a difficult and time consuming task when we try to do all the work ourselves especially when we have a lot of yard to keep up. Keeping up with growing grass, flower beds, tree pruning, and more can be tiresome and expensive, but we do it because we think the appearance of our home is worth the effort it takes.

What is not good for our landscaping is when water wreaks havoc with certain areas in the yard. The worst place in the world for excess water to gather and stand is near the foundation of our house. Water accumulation here can cause some serious problems over time if the problem is not corrected the right way.

Usually when water stands too near the foundation it is because it does not have proper drainage or the landscaping slopes down hill toward the home instead of up and away from it. It is important that the area around the house foundation is higher and this helps the water to flow away from the foundation. Standing water is also a magnet for mosquitoes, but it can cause cracking and leaks in the foundation itself. There are ways to correct the problem and it should be attended to as soon as it is discovered.

If you have a basement in your home, water standing at the foundation can eventually cause you to have leaking into the basement. This can be costly to have repaired, not to mention the aggravation it can cause when a basement in standing in water. Sometimes you might be able to do the landscaping yourself. The problem can also be because of faulty gutters. Check your gutters first to see if that is causing the problem.

If the water issue near your foundation is not being caused from your gutters and you can not alleviate the landscaping problem on your own, you might have to call in a professional landscaper to fix it. It might cost you a little money for the yard repair to be done now, but it will be more expensive later if it causes your foundation to crack and start leaking either underneath your home in the crawl space or into your basement.
Rachel Yoshida is a writer of many topics, visit some of her sites, like
Water Damage Restoration and Water Damage Boston .

Water Damage Can Cause Mold Problems

After you have had either a small or large flood in the home, when the water has been cleaned up you might think your problems are over. This might be far from the case if you soon discover that you have mold growing anywhere that the flood water affected. The possibility for mold is greater depending on the amount of flood water and how long it was in the home.

Mold can begin to grow anywhere that was wet enough, long enough to get it started. This can be disastrous to the value of your home even if all the visible signs of the flood have been repaired. Sometimes the mold will not always be growing where it can be seen. It is notorious for developing and growing under the floors, in the walls, or under cabinets where it is not noticeable. Mold can grow for ages behind walls and not be detected until the walls are taken out. This is why so many people can develop allergies and illnesses that they can not explain.

If you notice that you or a family member has begun to develop sensitivities when they are in the home, mold might be the reason. Mold spores float in the air and are breathed into the body. The reactions to mold spores can be minor to severe, in some instances even deadly for those with extreme sensitivities or compromised immune systems. If you have recently had flooding in your home, you might consider having a water damage expert come in to check for signs of mold growth.

If you find serious mold growth somewhere in the home that can not be easily killed, perhaps behind walls, then you will need help in getting rid of it. It could be that some areas may need to be torn out altogether and replaced. In some instances it could be that a good size area will just need disinfecting with a mold killing product. If your mold is growing out in the open, try using chlorine bleach. This should destroy small areas of mold. Always go back and check later to make sure it has not started growing again.

Always check with your insurance company to see what you are covered for as far as home flooding. If your insurance will pay for a water damage company to come in and access and repair the damage, it is probably better to allow them to do this. Flooding and mold growth are serious issues when it comes to selling a home and you want to make sure that no permanent damage has been done to yours.

Rachel Yoshida is a writer of many topics, visit some of her sites, like
Water Damage NYC and Water Damage Florida .

Water Damage Comes In Many Forms

The majority of time when we think of water damage, we usually think about it happening in the home from one source or another, but actually when we think about it, precautions should be taken to protect many things in our life from damage sustained from water exposure. The home is by far the only thing that water can cause devastation to or even destroy.

What comes to mind second about water is what kind of devastation that it can do to electronic items of all kinds. Get water spilled into or an electronic item and it could mean certain death. This might not hold true in all cases, but in some it is. Digital cameras are really at risk of being totally destroyed by water or other liquids. It seems that repairing digital cameras or digital video cameras can be extremely difficult or impossible to repair after they are soaked. It might be worth checking into, but restoring it, if it can be, might cost as much as replacing the item.

What might surprise you are laptop computers and cell phones. For some reason they might actually stand a chance if they are only wet with water, but as with the digital cameras, you might not always be so lucky. Sometimes if you will just drain as much water from the laptop or cell phone as you can and leave it to dry out for several days, it might work fine. Might is the key word. If it does not function properly when you turn it back on, you can go ahead and see about having it repaired.

The main thing with any electronic item that gets wet is to turn it off and unplug it immediately. Do not attempt to turn it back on until you are certain it has had time to dry completely. If you want to be on the safe side, go ahead and take it to a repair person and let them deal with it.

Another expensive item that can be damaged severely by water is your vehicle. People can be in serious danger themselves when they try to cross flooded creeks or streams when it has rained heavily. Flash flooding has caused many human deaths and vehicle deaths as well. Just as with some electronics, just because your car was partially submerged with water does not mean that it can not be repaired. You will have to consider the cost of repair against the value of the car. Normally the insurance company will determine whether the damage is too substantial or not.

It just goes to show that we have to beware of the potential damage that water can do to many things. We have to have it to survive, but it surely can wreak a lot of havoc when it comes in contact with the wrong things.

Rachel Yoshida is a writer of many topics, visit some of her sites, like
Water Damage Restoration and Florida water damage restoration .

When To Hire A Water Damage Specialist

When your home has sustained substantial water damage because of natural disaster flooding or because of faulty plumbing, it is a situation that needs attention as quickly as you can get some. When the home has been flooded by several inches or more of water, time is of the essence when it comes to cleaning it up and drying it out. You may be in such shock and disbelief that you really do not know what to do. The first item on the agenda after the water has stooped flooding your house is to contact your insurance company. When you are sure whether or not you are covered by your policy, then you will better know what to do next.

If you are covered for the flood, then your insurance company will likely send someone out to access the damage and get a qualified company to make the repairs. If you are not covered by your insurance policy, then you will be on your own. If you find yourself in this position, there are some serious issues you need to consider.

If your flooding is due to a plumbing break and the water level is not serious, then you might be able to clean up most of the mess yourself, but drying out hardwood floors and preventing mold growth may not be something you can achieve alone. You should seriously consider hiring a professional to examine your home and give you recommendations as to what else needs to be done after the water has been removed.

If your home has been flooded badly because of a natural disaster of some sort and your insurance does not cover you, it is still almost certain you will need professional help. If you can not afford to hire a water damage professional to repair the damage to the home, you might look into getting government help. There are sometimes funds available to help pay for the clean up when you are not insured.

When you do hire a water damage company to repair your home, if the insurance company does not hire them for you, you will need to check their credentials to make sure they are licensed and insured. Do a background check with the Better Business Bureau to see if they have any bad marks or unsatisfied customers in their history. Never let anyone work on your home if they can not meet theses requirements.

Rachel Yoshida is a writer of many topics, visit some of her sites, like
Water Damage Restoration and Water Damage Florida .

Do You Know What To Do When Your Kitchen Or Bathroom Floods

There are several things that can go wrong unexpectedly in a bathroom or a kitchen that cause it to be flooded with water. You usually never saw it coming or you would surely have taken more precaution to prevent it. When it happens, there is nothing left to be done except to clean it up. If you are lucky, you will have caught the flood soon after it started, if you are not so lucky and it has been getting flooded for a while, you might not even be able to do all the clean up alone.

These unexpected floods in a kitchen can come from the plumbing under your sink. If the break in plumbing is from a drain pipe, it will only flood as long as water is going out. This might not be too bad. If it is a break in the pipe or the valve where the water comes in, this is worse because the water will continue to flow out until the water supply is turned off. This can also happen either way with the washing machine, refrigerator, or dishwasher. Always make sure that incoming water lines are in good repair to help avoid a flooding catastrophe.

In the bathroom, the usual culprits for flooding are the sinks, tub, or toilet. Doing inspections to your plumbing can always reduce the risk of flooding, but that does not help after the damage has been done. How you clean up the mess is very important. If your toilet has flooded the bathroom and there is sewage spilled out onto the floor, the entire area will need disinfecting after it is cleaned up.

Even after the water has been cleaned up and the plumbing repaired, you will still need to make sure that all the places that were wet with water are completely dried out. Wood surfaces, walls, or behind tub and shower stalls if they were affected, will need to be examined soon after the flood to look for signs of mold growth. Mold can grow anywhere there is moisture and when it gets behind a wall it can be extremely difficult to kill without tearing it out.

Although you might clean up, repair, and make a mold inspection your self, if the flooding is bad enough, you should consider having a water damage expert to come in and access the damage for you. The clean up and mold prevention might entail more than you can do on your own. It is better to have the flood cleaned up correctly in order to save you from mold issues later. Mold damage can be very costly to repair after it has taken a hold somewhere in your home. It is hazardous to you and your family and will be disastrous to the value of your home if it is left to grow.

Rachel Yoshida is a writer of many topics, visit some of her sites, like
Water Damage NYC and Water Damage Tampa .

Scary Facts About Your Roof And Water Damage

This is the best time of the year to inspect your roof for leaks and have any repairs needed tended to. The weather is warm and it makes it so much easier to inspect inside and out. During the cold weather months is not a good time to discover that you have loose shingles exposing the roof wood decking to rain, snow, or ice. The cost of having a roof repair done in winter weather might even cost you more.

Examining the inside of your roof in the attic might be a job that you can handle yourself if you know what to look for. Actually, the best time to get in the attic to inspect is during a good rainfall. This way it is much easier to tell where a leak is coming from. If you find a place that is leaking, mark it in some way so you will be sure and know where it is again when you have it repaired. If you check when it is not raining, you may be able to see spots on the floor, walls, or rafters where it has leaked and dried up. Check for signs like this on the insulation as well.

Checking the rooftop outside might present more of a problem than the inside. There can always be an element of danger anytime you climb up onto a rooftop. If you are not afraid of heights and are sure footed enough, you might be able to handle it, but anytime the roof it very sloped or you have a fear of heights, it is probably for the best if you have a professional contractor come out to inspect for you. The charge for this could be covered by your insurance, but you would likely have to find out for sure first since policies usually differ to some degree.

Even if the roof top is visible to you pretty clearly, you might not be able to see where shingles are loose in spots and will be in danger of blowing off in a strong wind. This is not good to happen anytime because when it rains, the water can seep into cracks and possibly cause damage to wood surfaces underneath shingles and tar paper. Shingles around vent pipes and chimneys need top be checked carefully too.

If you have ever had a roof that was damaged badly because of exposure to water, then you probably already know that it can be costly to repair bad damage or replace entirely. The cheapest and easiest precaution is occasional inspections. It might cost a little for repairs now, but it could cost you a lot more later on.

Rachel Yoshida is a writer of many topics, visit some of her sites, like
Water Damage Restoration and Water Damage Tampa .

This will help you to make sure you are handling the situation correctly and stand a better chance of repairing the damage the best way possible.

Rachel Yoshida is a writer of many topics, visit some of her sites, like
Water Damage NYC and Water Damage Tampa .

Rachel Yoshida is a writer of many topics, visit some of her sites, like
Water Damage Restoration and Water Damage Tampa .

Rachel Yoshida is a writer of many topics, visit some of her sites, like
Water Damage NYC and Miami water damage restoration .

Florida Water Safety tips

It is the middle of summertime and one of the most popular activities this time of year is swimming. Staying safe while you around the pool or any other body of water is important any time, so there are a lot of things that you need to do to keep yourself and your children safe while swimming.

Any time you swim in a body of water other than an enclosed pool at your home or at a hotel, there is the risk of coming into contact with all kinds of wildlife. In the ocean, there are jellyfish, sharks, and sometimes even poisonous fishes that can injure you if you are not careful. Always pay attention to any kind of signs that are posted near these areas that warn against any kind of wildlife and you should be even more careful when swimming in rivers and creeks, since these areas can be even more hazardous because there are generally no signs to warn you of dangerous creatures.

Something else you should think about before doing is diving. You should never dive into a body of water unless you can determine how deep it is before you do so. This is especially true in rivers and creeks where the bottom is rarely ever visible due to mud and sediment in the water. It is rare that you can tell the depth of water simply by looking at it, so if you cannot judge how deep it is by getting in it first, do not dive.

If you like to drink alcoholic beverages, the best thing you can do is avoid drinking while taking part in any outdoor activity, including swimming. Alcohol can impair a number of your senses to the point where you are unable to swim well enough to keep yourself afloat and alcohol combined with outdoor activities causes a significant number of deaths every year. Never drink and drive, but never drink and swim, either.

Swimming with a lifeguard or with someone who knows CPR and first aid is the best thing that you can do. There is no reason for you or any of the rest of your family to not learn CPR and at least some minor first aid techniques, especially if you vacation outdoors often. Classes are often available locally and are generally free to the public. All it takes is a little time and effort and you can vacation knowing that there is at least one person among you that has the ability to save a life.

Make Mold In Your Home Die Of Thirst From Lack Of Water

Mold loves water, so you can imagine what areas of your home are the most at risk for mold growth. These areas will typically end up being your kitchen, bathroom, and your laundry room, since these rooms stay moist and wet most of the time, especially if you have a large family. Water damage is one of the most common causes of mold growth and almost always occurs on a large scale after a property has been flooded by mother nature. There are a lot of things that you can do in your home that cause mold, however, and they are completely preventable.

You are probably familiar with mildew, since that it what most people refer to what appears in their bathrooms or on wet rags that have been allowed to stay on the counter or in the sink for too long. Well, mildew is just about the same thing as mold, but a mold infestation tends to be more visible and mildew (especially on wet kitchen rags) is less visible, but tends to be slimy.

Letting the bathtub, dishwasher, or clothes washer overflow is also a pretty bad idea, so you want to make sure all appliances in your home that use water are in good repair. Think about the trouble you could save if you just get a new clothes washer or dishwasher? That is, if you can afford it. If not, the best thing to do is just save up for a new one as you can and clean up spills immediately after they occur. These incidents can do a lot more damage to your floor over time than you think, especially if they make it all the way to the carpet in another room. The bad thing about carpet is not so much that the carpet cannot be cleaned and dried, but that once the padding underneath gets molded, there is not anything that you can do to save it. It just has to be torn up and replaced, since it will just shred if you try to clean it.

You should also keep an eye on the plumbing in your kitchen under the sink. The plumbing under here can rupture or leak just like anywhere else in the house, so try to make sure there are no leaks in this area. The best thing for your kitchen is to have a hard surface for flooring, such as tile or stone, but never carpet or hardwood.

Does Bleach Kill Mold?

I have been asked this question many times, and everytime, the answer is more complicated than you would think. If you put bleach on mold directly, yes it will. But when a home, condo, apartment complex or commercial building has a mold problem, you had better call in the Pro's or you will be risking your families and customers health.

The reason that this is true is because mold on the exterior of drywall or ceiling tiles is more often than not on the reverse side also, and the average homeowner is not going to see this and assume that they killed all of the mold, when the reality is that they may have only killed the surface problem and the core of the mold colony is behind the sheetrock, or even in the insulation.

Mold feeds on anything organic, and there is paper on both sides of the drywall, and many insulations are organic in nature. So all you need is a little moisture and some warm weather.

The moisture can be from a minor leak in a plumbing pipe that will not expose itself as a leak because the leak is so small, so cleaning what you see with bleach is doing nothing but giving a false sense of security.

It could also be a small roofing leak, or even just a lack of vents and high humidity.
